Biggest Travel Insurance Myths, Busted

Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions about travel health insurance that commonly exist and which we hear quite often. Understanding why these misconceptions are incorrect can help you make a more informed decision regarding whether or not travel health insurance is right for you or your family.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest travel insurance myths and get down to the facts.

1. I’m Healthy, So I Won’t Need Travel Health Insurance When I’m Abroad

Story time. A recent immigrant was getting ready to host his visiting parents from India. He secured travel insurance for his mother but not for his father, because his father is ex-military and in great physical shape. Unfortunately, the father suffered a head injury while visiting his son and had to be admitted to the hospital. His father was admitted to the hospital and the total bill was around $76,000.

Though the recent immigrant tried to get travel insurance for his father after the accident, it was too late.

This is not the only incident which we have come across – there are many similar cases to this, however this is a simple example of just how risky such a wrong decision can be.

Travel insurance is needed for everyone traveling abroad, especially when they’re visiting a country where healthcare costs are extremely high, like America.

2. Visitors Insurance Isn’t Worth It, Since Most Claims Are Denied Due to Pre-existing Conditions

Interestingly, many people don’t say this out of their own experiences, but report that this is something hey have heard from other or read online. While it is not true that most claims are denied due to pre-existing conditions it is true that the majority of claims that are denied are due to pre-existing conditions. Spot the difference?

Most visitors insurance plans do not cover pre-existing conditions but some do. Many buyers are unaware of this fact, especially when they purchase an insurance plan and only look at the policy maximum amount assuming everything is covered. A claim denial for services given for an existing condition comes as a big shock.
