Does a “Full Coverage” Travel Insurance Plan Exist?

When looking for travel insurance for the U.S., many travelers may think that there’s a full coverage plan out there. Unfortunately, no such plan exists. No plan provides 100% coverage for all your health and travel risks. Exclusions are kept in a policy to mitigate the most common and potential risk for the insurance company. This is how the insurance company can keep the premium low, remain in business, and not pay out more than what they earn. Travel Insurance is no exception to this. The most common exclusions are pre-existing conditions and preventative care.

Despite this, travel insurance is an important safeguard for travelers, especially if they’re visiting a country like the U.S. where healthcare can be expensive. The fundamental purpose of insurance is to cover unplanned and unforeseen risks. Protecting yourself is a wise thing to do, especially while traveling abroad, since you are more vulnerable to unforeseen health hazards, accidents, and travel emergencies.

What Should You Look for in a Travel Insurance Plan?

Focus on what is most important for you. For example: If you’re planning to go on a cruise, or mountaineering trip, opt for a plan that covers for medical evacuation, so in case of a sudden emergency situation you can be evacuated.

Travel insurance plans are as unique as travelers themselves. Chances are you’ll find a plan with the benefits you need. Think about what kind of trip you’ll be going on. Is it for business or leisure? Will you be relaxing or partaking in adventurous activities? How long will you be abroad?

You’ll also want to think about your own specific needs. How old are you? Are you more vulnerable to illness or injury?  Answering these questions can help lead you to the right travel medical insurance plan for you.
