Here is how to evaluate what type of insurance to get for your wife who is a dependent visa holder in the US: Does she live here in the US permanently and require long-term insurance, or is she visiting and needs only temporary insurance for the duration of her visit to the US? Scenario #1 : If  you are looking for a long-term insurance: If you are looking for long-term insurance, and have a qualified health insurance for yourself, either through your employer, or on your own, then consider adding her to your health insurance. Under the new federal healthcare law PPACA, or "Obamacare," you and your wife may be required to obtain a PACA qualified health insurance policy.  Please read: The Affordable Care Act and Temporary Foreign Workers Scenario #2: Insurance for a short stay in the US: As a non-US citizen visiting for a short duration, your wife may qualify for temporary visitors' insurance. You can purchase travel insurance here: Visitors' Insurance: Get Quotes These insurance policies provide coverage solely for new medical conditions as per the policy terms, and often do not have coverage for maternity, child birth, existing conditions, etc. Be sure to review the policy documents for details.
