Short term travel insurance plans generally only provide coverage for new and unexpected illness or injury that occurs after the policy goes into effect. These do not offer much coverage for pre-existing conditions, preventive care, dental or vision. For parents visiting the US, consider the CoverAmerica - Gold plan, as it provides coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions coverage. For age 69 and under, the plan covers up to the policy maximum limit for acute onset, and up to $30,000 for people age 70-79.
An acute onset is a sudden and unexpected recurrence of a pre-existing condition that occurs without any advanced warning and requires immediate medical attention. It is always up to the attending physician to determine if a given medical situation the result of a pre-existing condition or not, and also if it would be considered an acute onset. You can find our more details about acute onset of pre-existing conditions in the plan brochure and description of coverage.
