Atlas America insurance is a visitor insurance plan that provides medical coverage and emergency services to Non-US citizens travelling outside their home country, including the USA. This plan also offers limited coverage for *acute onset of pre-existing conditions* for visitors. After the deductible is satisfied, the plan pays 100% up to policy maximum, both for travel within and outside the USA.

*Acute onset of a pre-existing condition*: A sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition(s) which occurs spontaneously and without advance warning either in the form of physician recommendations or symptoms, is of short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent care.

If you are under age 70, you are covered for acute onset of a pre-existing condition up to the selected medical maximum (excludes chronic and congenital conditions). And for Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage is up to $25,000.
For ages 70-79, up to $100,000 in acute onset of pre-existing conditions coverage.
An acute onset of a re-existing condition is a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition which occurs spontaneously and without advance warning either in the form of physician recommendations or symptoms. Treatment must be obtained within 24 hours of the sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence.

Home Country Definition

US citizens: Home Country is always the United States, regardless of the location of your Principal Residence.
Non US citizens: Home Country is the country where you principally reside and receive regular mail.

US States Restrictions

Cannot be physically located in Maryland, New York, Washington, Canada or Australia at time of purchase. This restriction is only for purchase. The plan still provides coverage for a policy holder visiting NY, MD, or WA.

Atlas America Insurance FAQ

Q1. Am I eligible for Atlas America?

Non US-citizens and Non-US residents traveling to the U.S can purchase Atlas America.

Q2. What Information do I need to buy the Plan?

You would need the name of the traveler(s), dates of birth(s), travel dates and mailing address of the visitor(s). A valid credit card is also required to purchase the plan.

Q3. When will I receive my ID card?

An email confirmation will be sent after purchase. The email will include links and instructions on how to access and print out your ID card.

Q4. Does the Atlas America cover coronavirus?

A: Depending on when you purchased a travel insurance policy and the type of plan purchased, coverage for coronavirus, if any, may vary. For more in-depth information regarding the impact of the coronavirus on travel insurance, please go to our information hub.

Q5. Can I extend the plan, if I plan to stay longer?

Yes, if you buy the plan initially for more than 5 days, you can extend the policy. It is recommended to extend the plan at least two days before the policy expires. There is a $5 extension fee added to the premium for the additional days of coverage. The policy can be extended for up to a maximum of 364 days.

Q6. Can I cancel the plan, if I plan to go back earlier?

Yes, you can cancel and get a refund for the Atlas America plan, if you need to go back earlier than planned. The following rules apply:

  • Written request is required for any cancellation.
  • You can get refund back, only if you do not need to visit the doctor/provider while the policy is in force.
  • If you cancel before the start date, you would get the full refund back.
  • If you cancel after the policy start date, you can get a pro-rated refund for the number of days left in the policy.
  • $25 cancellation fee applies.
  • If there is any claim on file, you would not get any refund back.
  • Q7. Are pre-existing conditions covered by the Atlas America Plan?

    Pre-existing conditions are not covered by Atlas America Plan. However, the Atlas America Plan covers up to the policy maximum for acute onset of pre-existing conditions in people up to 69 years of age. For age 70-79, the plan provides up to $100,000 in coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions. It is up to the attending physician to determine if a particular medical situation is related to pre-existing condition or not, and also if it would be considered as an acute onset or not. Pre-existing condition is defined as an Injury, illness, sickness, disease, or other physical, medical, mental, or nervous conditions, disorder or ailment (whether known or unknown) that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of application or within the 2 years immediately preceding the certificate effective date. Please check the Description of Coverage for more information about what is considered as acute onset of pre-existing condition.

    Q8. What is an acute onset of pre-existing condition?

    An acute onset is a sudden unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition which occurs spontaneously and without advance warning either in the form of physician recommendations or symptoms, is of short duration. It has to be an acute medical condition that requires immediate medical attention. More conditions and restrictions apply. Please check the Description of Coverage to understand what is covered as an acute onset of pre-existing condition.

    Q9. What is the Incidental Home Country Coverage?

    During the policy period, if you need to go back to your home country for a short trip, and come back again, then the plan would cover in your home country for such short trips. For US residents, coming back to the USA for an incidental trip, the maximum number of days for coverage is 15 days. The maximum number of days covered in the incidental trip to the home country for Non-US residents is 30 days. The trip must not be taken for medical purposes. Incidental home country coverage does not apply to the final trip to the home country.

    Q10. Which doctor or hospital can I go to?

    You can go to any doctor or hospital of your choice and be covered 100% for eligible medical expenses. However, if you choose to go to a provider within the United Healthcare PPO network for Atlas Plan, benefit prices may be negotiated.

    Q13. When I buy this plan, do I need to make the full payment at once or do I have the option of paying it on a monthly basis?

    Payment in full is required in order for coverage to begin. There is no monthly payment options.

    You can choose to renew your coverage monthly. There is a $5 extension fee applied for each extension done.
