Student Health Advantage - Platinum (A.M. Best Rating: A) is a premium travel medical insurance plan for international students, scholars, and their eligible dependents studying abroad. As the highest level of coverage within the Student Health Advantage product line, it offers comprehensive medical benefits, higher coverage limits, emergency assistance, and enhanced healthcare protection throughout the covered period. Coverage is available from 5 days to 365 days.

While in the U.S., after the deductible is satisfied within the United Healthcare PPO network, the plan will pay 90% of eligible medical expenses up to $1,000, then 100% thereafter, up to the policy maximum. Outside of the PPO network, the plan will pay 80% in eligible medical expenses, up to the policy maximum.

Student Health Advantage does not cover pre-existing conditions during the first 6 months of continuous coverage. Coverage may become available after 6 months of continuous enrollment, subject to policy terms and conditions.

Eligibility for Student Health Advantage - Platinum

  • For J1, M1, F1 or A1 visa holders
  • For ages 31 days old to 64 years
  • Be a participant: a student, scholar, intern, teacher, or trainee enrolled in an educational or cultural exchange program for the purposes of teaching, study, research, or receiving on the job training for a temporary period of time
  • Be the spouse of a participant or children of a participant and residing outside his/her primary country of residence for a temporary period of time. Primary applicant must hold a J1, M1, F1 or A1 visa, and spouse must apply with primary applicant - they cannot apply alone
  • Be physically and legally residing in the destination country with the intent to reside there for at least 30 days on the effective date and at renewal
  • Not be hospitalized, disabled, pregnant, or HIV+ on the initial effective date
  • Meets student visa requirements
  • Extendable for up to 365 days
  • Plan can be purchased after arrival at the destination

The Adventure Sports Rider is available for those up to the age of 65. The following activities are covered to the lifetime maximum amounts listed below as long as they are engaged solely for leisure, recreation, or entertainment purposes:any Illness or Injury sustained while taking part in activities designated as Adventure Sports, which are limited to the following: abseiling; BMX; bobsledding; bungee jumping; canyoning; caving; hot air ballooning; jungle zip lining; parachuting; paragliding; parascending; rappelling; skydiving; spelunking; whitewater kayaking or whitewater rafting in water less than Class V difficulty; wildlife safaris; and windsurfing.

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Student Health Advantage program:
The individual applicant or group member must be a full-time student or scholar at a college, university, or educational institution.
The individual applicant or group member must reside outside his/her home country for the purpose of pursuing international, educational activities.
Must not have obtained residency status in the host country.
Dependents have to be legal dependents, traveling with individual applicants or group members and traveling outside their home country Family members do not constitute a group.

How to Use Your Visitor Insurance

Each insurance company may have their own state-specific regulations on where plans can be sold. These state restrictions only impact residents from those specific states from purchasing these plans. However, if you are traveling to the United States, you will be covered in all 50 states during your active policy period.

If you purchase the plan for a minimum of 5 days, coverage may be extended for a total of up to 12 months from the initial effective date. Provided there is no break in coverage, the plan may be extended up to 5 years.

A full refund is available if you request for cancellation before the start date. After the start date, a refund for the unused days is available if no claims have been made. A $50 Cancellation fee is applicable.

You cannot remove one person from the policy if other travelers are included. We recommend letting the current policy lapse with all travelers or canceling and repurchasing for the remaining travelers as per the policy terms.

You will need names, coverage duration, date(s) of birth, home country address, and a valid credit card.

The printout of the online confirmation /virtual ID card is the proof of insurance and can be used when you visit the doctor or hospital. While filling out the online application, if you select online fulfillment, you will not receive anything in snail mail, but in your email. If you select the snail mail option then you won't receive your ID card in email but to your mailing address within 5-10 business days.

Student Health Advantage-Platinum can cover for COVID-19 and will be treated the same as any other eligible medical condition so long as the virus is contracted after the policy effective date and you have departed from the country of residence. Coverage will begin on the date selected and once the policyholder has left their home country. The policy will cover for new conditions that occur after the policy effective date. For pre-existing condition coverage, there may be a specified waiting period before coverage is provided. Please review the policy documents for any limits or exclusions.
Coverage on a travel medical insurance plan will begin on the date of departure and once the traveler has left their home country. Coverage areas are anywhere outside ones' home country as long as the policy is active. The coverage will end immediately once the traveler has entered back into their home country.
No, your Student Health Advantage-Platinum plan won't be extended or renewed automatically. You have to sign into your account online and activate the extension or renewal yourself. Not all plans are extendable or renewable, so be sure to review your policy terms and conditions for eligibility.

The Student Health Advantage-Platinum plan does not cover for the COVID-19 vaccine/booster, but will cover COVID-19 treatment and services the same as any other eligible condition if contracted after the policy effective date. Preventative care related to COVID-19, like vaccines/boosters is not covered under the policy. Please sign in to your account to view your plan specific documents for any limits or exclusions.

Student Health Advantage-Platinum will only cover for COVID-19 testing if the policyholder is experiencing symptoms and the test is ordered by an attending physician for diagnostic purposes. COVID-19 tests to meet travel requirements will not be covered.

The Student Health Advantage-Platinum plan does not offer any coverage for quarantine.

This plan provides coverage for the participants spouse and unmarried dependent children traveling with them.

 Yes, this plan covers pregnancy up to $5,000. The benefit includes newborn routine care during the first 31 days of life.

The insurance provider recommends that you submit any correction requests in writing as your policy is a legally enforceable document. Following receipt of the correction, we send the request to the insurance provider; normally, the updates require 3-5 business days. They are processed in the order that they are received. We advise double-checking the information on the application before completing the purchase to prevent any errors and corrections.
The Adventure Sports Rider is available for those up to the age of 65. The following activities are covered to the lifetime maximum amounts listed below as long as they are engaged solely for leisure, recreation, or entertainment purposes: abseiling, BMX, bobsledding, bungee jumping, canyoning, caving, hang gliding, heli-skiing, high diving, hot air ballooning, inline skating, jet skiing, jungle zip lining, kayaking, mountain biking, parachuting, paragliding, parascending, piloting a non-commercial aircraft, rappelling, rock climbing or mountaineering (ropes and guides to 4500m from ground level), scuba diving (to 50m), skydiving, snorkeling, snow boarding, snowmobiling, snow skiing, spelunking, surfing, trekking, whitewater rafting (to Class V), and wildlife safaris, and windsurfing. All such activities must be carried out in strict accordance with the rules, regulations and guidelines of the applicable Governing Body or Authority of each such activity. Certain sports activities are never covered, regardless of whether or not you purchase the Adventure Sports Rider. Please see exclusion 8 in the exclusions page.
