Can you buy policy coverage for the days before your trip begins?

Updated Nov 11, 2024
Answer provided by a licensed Insurance advisorLicensed U.S. Insurance Specialist at VisitorsCoverage
Travel medical insurance policies cannot be backdated, as they are designed to cover unexpected events that occur after the policy begins. Coverage can start as soon as the day after you purchase the policy, and it must be outside of your home country for it to be valid.

To ensure you’re covered as soon as you begin your travels, it’s important to purchase your policy in advance and activate it before your trip starts.
