For comprehensive travel medical insurance plans, your deductible is the amount you pay out-of-pocket before your coverage begins. For example, if you select a $250 deductible, you’ll be responsible for the first $250 of your medical expenses. Once you’ve paid that, your policy starts covering the rest of your eligible costs. If you choose a $0 deductible, your coverage begins immediately, and you won’t need to pay anything upfront.

Here’s another example: if your plan covers 80% of costs up to $5,000 and 100% after that, your insurance will pay 80% of eligible expenses for the first $5,000. After you reach that limit, your plan covers 100% of additional medical costs, according to your policy terms. You only pay your deductible once, it’s not a recurring fee.

You can choose the deductible amount that works best for you, but keep in mind that it may affect the cost of your policy.
