Trip Insurance Claim Process

US citizens and US Residents, who live in the US, are covered by these plans, for traveling both within the US, as well as internationally outside the US.

Generali Global Assistance is unable to provide coverage for travel to Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, the Russian Federation, Syria, Venezuela, Crimea, and the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk, and Luhansk People's regions.

You can qualify for coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, as long as the travel protection plan is purchased prior to or within 24 hours of your final trip payment, you are medically able to travel at the time the plan is purchased, and all prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions have been insured.
These plans can only provide coverage to US residents for trips within the United States or internationally, except for restricted Destination Countries mentioned in the Purchase Restrictions tab.

Trip plans are not renewable. The trip dates and trip costs can be modified as long as there is no loss/reason to file a claim and the departure date/return date has not passed. Changes to the trip dates/trip cost could affect the premium. The return date could also be modified if the traveler is currently on their trip, but could not be modified once the return date has passed.

From the time of purchase, every Generali travel insurance plan includes a designated free look period in which you may cancel your plan for a full refund if it doesn't suit your needs.

For most states of residence, you may cancel your plan within 10 to 15 days from the time of purchase (state restrictions apply). If you live in Indiana, the free look period gives you 30 days to decide if your plan is right for you.

Keep in mind, you can only cancel your plan within the free look period as long as you have not filed a claim, or left on your trip.

You cannot remove one person from the policy if other travelers are included. We recommend letting the current policy lapse with all travelers or canceling and repurchasing for the remaining travelers as per the policy terms.

You will need names, coverage duration, date(s) of birth, primary destination, home country address, total nonrefundable trip costs, and a valid credit card.

After purchasing the policy online, you will receive your ID card in your confirmation email.
Coverage will be provided in all eligible countries visited with the exception of any restricted countries mentioned in the Purchase Requirements section. Please note: If any part of your trip includes the United States, please select it as your destination country.

Generali Premium can cover for COVID-19 illness and will be treated the same as any other eligible medical condition so long as the virus is contracted after the policy effective date and you have departed from the country of residence.

If you, a family member or a traveling companion are diagnosed with COVID-19 before or during your trip, and meet the requirements for coverage due to sickness, you can be covered for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Travel Delay, Medical & Dental, and Emergency Assistance & Transportation, in addition to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance services. You can also be covered for additional lodging expenses and extension of your travel insurance plan if you are required to isolate at your destination and your return is delayed.

Only the primary destination in the application will be listed on the policy documents, but rest assured that all other eligible inputted countries will be covered during the active policy period. Pick the location where you will spend the most time and choose the listed location nearest to your destination. If you are spending equal time at your destinations, select whichever you are visiting first.

Coverage on a trip insurance plan will begin the day after you have purchased your policy.

The Generali Premium Plan does not cover the COVID-19 vaccine/booster, but will cover COVID-19 treatment and services the same as any other eligible condition if contracted after the policy effective date. Preventative care related to COVID-19, like vaccines/boosters, is not covered under the policy. Please sign in to your account to view your plan specific documents for any limits or exclusions.

Generali Premium will only cover COVID-19 testing if the policyholder is experiencing symptoms and the test is ordered by an attending physician for diagnostic purposes. COVID-19 tests to meet travel requirements will not be covered.

Yes, if you or your traveling companion are in enforced isolation for the purpose of preventing the spread of illness, disease or pests then you could be covered under the Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Travel Delay benefit. The Travel Delay benefit can provide reimbursement for reasonable expenses incurred such as accommodations, meals and local transportation if you are delayed for 6 hours or more. Per person and daily limit applies.

The trip cost should include any non-refundable payments made related to the trip. In case of unforeseen cancellation of the trip, these costs would be lost. Examples of these are costs of airline tickets, hotel reservations, tour reservations, etc.

Generali Premium has an optional Cancel for Any Reason benefit that can be added to a policy. The coverage limit is 75% of the penalty amount. Not available to NY residents. Cancel for Any Reason must be purchased within 24 hours of your initial trip payment date. Please review your policy terms and conditions for a list of exclusions and restrictions.

The trip cancellation benefit can cover the following specified covered reasons:

  • Sickness, injury, or death of insured, a family member, a travel companion, or service animal
  • Insured's primary residence or destination uninhabitable
  • Documented theft of passports/visas
  • Involuntary termination or layoff
  • Documented traffic accident directly involving insured while en route to departure
  • Inclement weather that causes cessation of services provided by your common carrier

Certain terms and conditions apply. Review Plan Documents for full details.

Trip Cancellation provides reimbursement for unused, non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you are prevented from taking your trip due to a covered reason. This coverage takes effect the following day after purchase and ends on the scheduled departure date.

Trip Interruption provides reimbursement for unused, non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if your trip is interrupted due to a covered event. Also provides reimbursement for the additional transportation cost to return home or rejoin your group. This coverage begins once you depart on your trip and ends on your scheduled return date.

Some of the differences among the plans are mostly the level of coverage. The Standard plan offers the most basic coverage, and does not include certain coverages such as the Cancel for Any Reason option. The Preferred plan is the one that provides medium range coverage; the Premium plan offers the most extensive benefit features and amounts among all the options.

The insurance provider recommends that you submit any correction requests in writing as your policy is a legally enforceable document. Following receipt of the correction, we send the request to the insurance provider; normally, the updates require 3-5 business days. They are processed in the order that they are received. We advise double-checking the information on the application before completing the purchase to prevent any errors and corrections.

If you, a family member or a traveling companion are diagnosed with Monkeypox before or during your trip, and meet the requirements for coverage due to sickness, you can be covered for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Travel Delay, Medical & Dental, and Emergency Assistance & Transportation, in addition to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance services. You can also be covered for additional lodging expenses and extension of your travel insurance plan if you are required to isolate at your destination and your return is delayed.

For more information regarding Monkeypox and travel insurance, review the blog about Monkeypox.

The Generali Premium plan does not cover the Monkeypox vaccine, but will cover Monkeypox treatment and services the same as any other eligible condition if the virus was contracted after the policy effective date. Preventative care related to Monkeypox is not covered under the policy. Please sign in to your account to view your plan specific documents for any limits or exclusions.
