While this enchanting South American country has reopened to U.S. travelers, officials have also implemented very specific COVID-19 safety protocols. For one, your travel health insurance for Costa Rica must cover COVID.
Finding the best travel medical insurance for Costa Rica can be challenging due to Costa Rica's unique set of restrictions. All travelers to Costa Rica must complete an electronic health pass form and buy travel medical insurance for Costa Rica that meets the following requirements:
Costa Rica's travel requirements
As of August 1, 2021, fully vaccinated tourists do not require travel insurance to enter Costa Rica. However, fully vaccinated tourists must have received the vaccine from one of the accepted manufacturers. These include Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. Additionally, fully vaccinated travelers must provide adequate proof of vaccination for entry. For American tourists, this means showing your valid "COVID-19 Vaccinated Record Card."
Despite this change, all visitors to Costa Rica are still required to complete an electronic health pass form and, if you aren't vaccinated, you'll need to purchase travel insurance that meets the health pass requirements:
- Your travel health insurance for Costa Rica travel must be valid for the entire length of your stay
- Costa Rica travel insurance for COVID must cover at least $50,000 USD of expenses relating to Covid care
- Your travel insurance policy must have a minimum allowance of $2,000 USD for extended lodging expenses, should your trip be interrupted, canceled or extended due to COVID-19
Travel insurance for Costa Rica that meets these requirements will continue to be mandatory for unvaccinated travelers until further notice.
