The State Department announced on Friday that processing time for U.S. passports have been extended to an average of twelve weeks. Owing to the resurgence of travel demand following the pandemic, passport processing times have already been slowed by a backlog of applications. Friday’s announcement now means international travelers should expect processing times of three months or more. Expedited processing, a service provided for an extra $60, now takes about eight weeks. Consequently, travelers in need of new passports should plan well in advance to ensure that their travel documents are processed in time for their trips.
